JET Mentoring
A key feature of JET’s multi-year pathway is our mentorship program, which supports participants throughout their journey toward college completion and teacher licensure. This one-on-one support model helps ensure that more aspiring teachers complete the program.
How JET Mentoring Works
JET pairs each new participant with a veteran teacher or JET alum working in the same school district. At the start of every fall semester, we bring together all of the new participants and their mentors to meet one another and build community.
Over the course of the academic year, mentors and mentees develop individualized goals and check-in with one another monthly. They may work on areas like:
building mentees’ confidence to succeed in college courses
finding balance in work, college and family responsibilities
understanding what it takes to become a licensed teacher
keeping an eye on the long-term goal and motivating mentees to stay on the journey
Mentors receive orientation, training and ongoing support from our seasoned staff, led by Casel Walker.
Participants remain with their mentor until they complete the program
An essential relationship for developing teachers
JET participants rave about the mentorship program, expressing the importance of having a dedicated individual who they can ask questions or go to seek support.
“The best part [of JET’s support system] is to have someone to go to and vent, and you know they are going to be there for you.”
