JET’s “Participant Spotlight” series highlights fun facts about our participants.

What is your favorite work related activity during this time?

I would have to say that taking small groups and having the ability to work with students one on one is what I most enjoy during remote learning. Small groups give me the ability to take a moment and check in with the students and see where they are during this challenging time. Students really enjoy being able to share a little bit about their day and are more likely to communicate where they are struggling or achieving academically.

If you could have dinner with one person, who would it be and why?

Although I am fortunate to still have my Mom with me, I would have to say that I would choose her. Since March, we have been unable to see each other, except for some extreme social distancing visits. Due to pre-existing health concerns, we have made the sacrifice to keep our distance. She is my biggest cheerleader and the first person I look to for advice. Sitting down with her for a relaxed and long dinner would be my wish.

What is your favorite book or who is your favorite author and why?

My favorite book is "For One More Day" by Mitch Albom. The story asks the question, "What would you do if you had one more day with a loved one?" I have read this book several times and it is a great reminder that we should say or do what we need before it's too late.

What have you learned about yourself that has helped you cope in this COVID-19 environment?

I have definitely learned that keeping busy is good for the soul. At the beginning of this pandemic, I froze. I was so fearful and felt like I was sitting and waiting for it to end. A busy schedule has helped me cope these days. Along with taking care of my family and working as a Paraprofessional, I am currently taking three courses, and it really helps keep my mind busy and brings a sense of normalcy to life.
