2021 JETMP Check-In

The JET Mentors held their second mentor session on January 21, 2021. All of the mentors and JET staff came together to celebrate accomplishments, share ideas, and strengthening mentoring skills.

JETMP started in Boston in the 2016-17 school year, with experience teachers, and school administrators. We started with 3 mentors and today we have 18 mentors partnering with 43 paraprofessionals in 5 districts throughout the state! We have come a long way and have deepened our understanding of our role and expectations as mentors.

So, what’s new you ask? This year we added “goal setting” for our mentees. We learned a lot about how to support our mentees and thought about ways to think more about meaningful and relevant goals.

School / Professional Goals

  • 68% of the goals focused on school or professional improvement and were specifically related to being a student, obtaining a job and licensure. Examples of School / Professional Goals: “To Take and pass MTEL” “Maintain my grades at B or A level” “To complete BA and possibly apply to graduate school…” “Stay focused and ask for help on assignments when needed.” “To graduate and work as a teacher.” “Complete 4 classes during the fall semester.” “Get 2 hours available every day for reading and school work.”

Personal Goals

  • 31% of the goals were personal goals that focused on improving self, self-care and family. Examples of Personal Goals: “Staying health, running and working out” “Make a checklist and sticking to it.” “To work on my personal health and well-being as a mother of four.” “Track how long I talk on the phone and reduce the amount of phone time.” “Take time for self and family.”

Our time together provided an opportunity to discuss challenges, celebrate success and provide resources and conversations on ways to make the mentor / mentee partnership more effective. Stay tuned as we prepare for session 3!
